Czech Republic: SWIETELSKY stavební is expanding the D3 highway

09.01.2024

In close proximity to the state border with Austria, SWIETELSKY stavební is constructing a new highway section that replaces the existing road I/3 between Nažidla and Dolní Dvořiště. This route expands the D3 highway running south from Prague and connects the Czech capital to Linz via the Mühlviertler expressway S10. The ceremonial groundbreaking for the expansion, with a volume of around 35 million euros, took place on January 9.

The heavily trafficked two-lane road between Dolní Dvořiště and Nažidla, just a few meters from the Austrian border crossing Wullowitz, is being transformed into a modern highway through the expansion, meeting the demands of the high traffic volume on this route.

Spanning a length of 3.5 kilometers, the construction project includes three bridges, a grade-separated intersection, and a 1.5-kilometer noise barrier. A part of the existing road will be integrated, one lane will be expanded, and it will be brought up to the latest road construction standards. As part of the project, the existing intersection to Vyšší Brod will also be modernized.

Work has recently begun. “In the first weeks, the focus was primarily on the disposal of topsoil, followed by earthworks and network installation. In spring, we will start with the expansion of the bridge structures,” said Pavel Fišar, construction manager of SWIETELSKY stavební.

High regional and international significance

As part of the trans-European transport network TEN-T, the D3 plays a key role in the infrastructural connection between Northern and Southern Europe. This emphasizes the high importance of the construction project at both regional and international levels.

“Large highway projects are an important part of our company. They confirm the high technological and technical level of the entire company and its employees,” highlights Radim Čáp, managing director of SWIETELSKY stavební, emphasizing the high competence of the project team.

Construction began in January 2024, and the work is expected to be completed by 2026. The investor is the state “Ředitelstvi silnic a dalnic” (Directorate for Roads and Highways), which is funding the construction project in the amount of CZK 875 million (approximately EUR 35 million).
