Schloss Marchegg (NÖ) shines in new splendor

28.03.2022

The SWIETELSKY location in Mistelbach realized the construction work at the main site of the NÖ State Exhibition 2022.

The 2800 square meter, listed Baroque castle was completely renovated and made barrier-free. For this purpose, the floor structure and all non-load-bearing walls in the building were demolished. Around 2000 tons of demolition material were transported and disposed of, partly mechanically and partly manually. During the demolition work, the team came across several hidden treasures: Two bricked-up and previously unknown vaults were uncovered in coordination with the client, the municipality of Marchegg, and were thus preserved. To restore the historical condition of the chapel, a subsequently installed ceiling was removed. Subsequently, restorers reconstructed the wall paintings using scalpels and brushes.

A light well with a glass roof was integrated into the stairwell. A newly created lift shaft will ensure barrier-free access to all rooms in the building in the future. The pavilion, marked by settlement cracks and at risk of collapse, was slowly pushed up by about 15 centimeters under the supervision of a structural engineer using about 80 ceiling supports. The top of the vault was then cleaned and stabilized. The measures in the outdoor area included stone restorations, new wall crowns, and plaster repairs, along with new finishes for the garden walls and the large-scale creation of new access paths.

During the extensive renovation work, great emphasis was placed on restoring the historical castle as authentically as possible. Therefore, strict attention was paid to meeting the requirements of monument protection when selecting building materials.
