Dense fog, demanding night shifts, and high-precision work on the subgrade – during the construction of the new transfer station in Straß, both man and machine were put to the test. However, the result is impressive: thanks to the excellent collaboration of an experienced team and modern technology, the project was completed on time and with the highest quality despite challenging conditions.
A Masterpiece of Precision
The construction of the transfer station followed a precise and efficient plan. The first step was the installation of a 50-centimeter thick subgrade protection layer (PSS). This forms the stable foundation for the track system and ensures even load distribution. At the same time, the existing gravel was cleaned.
After the removal of the old track over a length of 2 × 275 meters, the actual track construction could begin. The team laid a total of four switches and 300 meters of new track, which were finally connected and stabilized precisely through tamping and welding work.
Project Team and Collaboration
The project was implemented by an experienced and versatile team, including:
- the PM-200 crew from Eurailpool,
- the German tamping machine crew (machine operator Marco Pescollderung),
- the Austrian railway crane crew (machine operator Ritz Christian),
- and track builders from Styria.
The close collaboration of all parties involved was crucial for success. Special thanks go to the dedicated SWIE team, which impressed with team spirit and commitment.
