After twelve intensive weeks of construction, the Salzburg Lokalbahn has successfully completed the full closure between Bürmoos and Ostermiething—on time and with a clear focus on long-term modernization. The project marks an important milestone for the line’s future development, strengthening day-to-day reliability while preparing the route for upcoming expansion.

Efficient delivery under a tight schedule

The works were delivered by SWIETELSKY Railway Construction Austria, with an emphasis on precise execution and efficient coordination throughout the tight construction window. A major part of the programme focused on renewing key sections of track: around 1,500 metres were rebuilt including subgrade rehabilitation. Here, a special stabilization method was applied that optimized the process, helped keep costs under control for the client, and supported delivery within the demanding schedule. In addition, a further 2,900 metres of track were renewed with new rails and ties, improving both ride quality and operational safety.

Beyond the running track itself, the project also took a strategic step toward future capacity growth. Two concrete switches were installed as an early but crucial component for the planned double-track expansion. Supporting infrastructure was upgraded as well, with extensive drainage and trench works completed along the line—ranging from deep drainage and drainage slits to railway trench construction, trench wall sections, and concrete shell installations. As part of the underground cable construction, approximately 5,400 metres of concrete cable trough (size III) were installed, creating a robust base for modern railway systems.

Strengthening operational flexibility

Logistics capability along the corridor was also strengthened through the construction of an approximately 250-metre loading track with a dedicated transshipment point, improving the area’s operational flexibility. To finish, around 3,500 metres of maintenance tamping work ensured the renewed track geometry meets performance requirements from day one.

Special recognition goes to colleagues from Swietelsky AG, Civil Engineering Salzburg, whose support played a key role in the refurbishment of three platforms and six level crossings—elements that directly impact passenger experience and overall network safety.

Taken together, these measures do more than renew infrastructure: they enhance safety, improve passenger facilities, and create the groundwork for future capacity increases and the sustainable development of the regional rail network.
