Refurbishment of Main Library at University of Vienna

Constructed around 1880, the Main Library of the University of Vienna, which was founded in 1365, is of great historical significance. This makes the project anything but a standard construction site.

Almost all interior components are being demolished and rebuilt, with the exception of the historic reading room. More than 300 tonnes of bookshelves have already been dismantled, removed from the building, and disposed of. Other major interventions include the construction of a new main entrance, as well as the reconstruction of the basement and floor slab.

Construction While University Operations Continue

The combination of technical, logistical, and organizational challenges makes the project particularly demanding. University operations are continuing throughout the construction work, requiring a high degree of coordination and precise execution. The only interruption occurs during examination weeks.

At the same time, modern construction requirements must be carefully balanced with heritage protection regulations. Structural challenges, limited storage space, and the building’s inner-city location require detailed planning and close coordination. Deliveries and material transport must be organized efficiently, while the needs of local residents must also be taken into account.

Bridge Construction Methods Beneath the Reading Room

One of the project’s technical highlights can be found beneath the historic reading room: Prestressed cast-in-place concrete beams were installed to support approximately 1,400 tonnes of load across a span of around 15 metres, despite having a structural depth measured in just centimetres.

A conventional solution was not possible in this case. Instead, a construction method more commonly associated with bridge building was used.

Solution Oriented: Complex Projects with Exceptional Solutions

That is precisely what makes this refurbishment so special: complex requirements call for exceptional solutions. Together with BIG, this construction project demonstrates what is possible when sound planning, technical expertise, and precise execution come together.
